So now you've figured out what's causing your artist's block; so now what? It's a devastating thing for an artist to feel like they've lost their inspiration. But suffering from a creative block does not mean that you've lost your artistic ability and it can be overcome. Face Your Fears Sometimes it's just the fear of not being able to do it that makes an artist lose their inspiration. The best way to overcome the fear is to approach the art as a job and DO IT. Set Numbers Force yourself to set an 'X' number of creative works. Simply getting into the paint itself will begin to inspire you, even if you don't like the subject matter. There's always something to learn. Change It Up Try changing up your media. Use a pencil? Try painting. Typically use acrylics? Switch to oil. Maybe your creative block is just the lack of varying products. Is all your work the same? If so, get some variations in there! Search Search Search! Search for new artists on the web, using Google's image search. Go to galleries. Try to find an artist who's doing something that appeals to you, something that the voice inside you says, "I could do that" or "I'd like to be able to do that." Secure an image and copy it to find out what that artist did and how. Then think about recombining ideas. What If? What if you played the 'what if' game? What if I painted this old subject matter on a tire? What if I put together a still life of bricks? How can I use a new material, a new subject matter, a new style? Be wild in your considerations. The sky is the limit or whatever. Keep It Personal Keep a journal of drawings and writings for a month. Pick something from the journal to paint. Review it in six months or a year. This can help keep your creative mind flowing when it's not blocked by a giant wall. Reviewing it can help get the flow going again. Get Help from Outside Sources Take classes that forces you to produce in a controlled environment. Ask teachers or peers what their thoughts are. Some of the best inspiration can come from other people. Do Not Force Yourself to Draw This may feel counter intuitive but sometimes forcing yourself to draw is the worst thing that you can do to overcome artist’s block. You’ll only be reinforcing the reason that made you suffer from art block and keep you from overcoming it. By letting go of drawing for some time, you’ll be able to recharge your creativity and you’ll feel less pressured to draw. Organize Your Life If the source of your art block is that you have too much on your plate and you’re paralyzed, you’ll need to solve that before you can overcome your artist’s block. Stop and organize your work space or whatever else that needs rearranging. With this you'll be able to prioritize tasks. Think about time management. That way you'll have a safety net and you won't feel overwhelmed by taking longer than expected. Look at Other Artists You're not alone, many other artist's have experienced a creative block and share online how they've overcome it. Such as Illustrator Ashley Goldberg reflects: "If it is a bigger creative block, I try to ride it out and just let it happen. I will still draw, but most pieces will end up in the trash, and that’s OK. I think some of the biggest bursts of creativity and artistic growth I’ve had are usually preceded by a big creative block." Art Block is tough, let’s be real. But it’s not the end of the world and you need to find the strategies that work best for you to avoid and reduce the time art block keeps you from drawing. There is nothing holding you back from creating your art except YOU!
